Dear Members:
As your first Chair from the “other side of the pond,” I am pleased to welcome you to a new ABA/Section year. On behalf of the leadership of the ABA Section of International Law (ABA International), I encourage you to get involved – we provide you with any number of opportunities. With more than sixty substantive committees (more than two dozen of which offer regular electronic newsletters), loads of internationally-focused CLEs (including remote options), and publications of all types, ABA International provides you with easy access to all areas of international practice. For those who want to be more active, please reach out to our Committee Leaders and Section Officers. We’re keen to get you involved!
The networking opportunities provided by our seasonal meetings are extraordinary. If you haven’t already, I hope you will make plans to attend our Fall Meeting in London, England, October 3-6. It is going to be a very special opportunity to meet with international practitioners (both in-house and outside counsel), academicians, and government officials from around the world and to network with fellow Section members from around the world. The early-bird discounted registration deadline is today, August 31st. Please click here for meeting details and to register now!
I am extraordinarily excited about a number of new initiatives taking off this year, including new Task Forces on Financial Engineering for Economic Development (FEED), Rule of Law and Health, and Legal Education and Specialist Certification, as well as an International Models Project on Women’s Rights (IMPOWER). These are very exciting new activities with great promise to help international lawyers and international law make a positive difference.
I would be remiss if I didn’t take this opportunity to give my heartfelt thanks to our Immediate Past Chair Deborah Enix-Ross for her superb guidance and direction. She will be a very hard act to follow but we are determined to build a monument to her good work on the solid foundations she, and our other very clever past chairs, put in place. Fortunately I am not trying to do this alone. I have a great leadership team backing me up, including Aaron Schildhaus, our Chair-Elect; Glenn Hendrix, Vice Chair; Salli Swartz, Financial Officer; Gabrielle Buckley, Secretary/Operations Officer; and Mike Burke, Liaison Officer. These folks, along with our very dedicated Officers and Council, are largely responsible for the high level of activity on programs, publications, policy and projects that provide tremendous value our members have come to expect.
On behalf of our entire leadership team, I look forward to working with you. And remember, when you think of our Section, think: "International Law, World Class!"
Jeffrey B. Golden, Section Chair

ABA International Technical Assistance
ABA UNDP International Legal Resource Center
The International Legal Resource Center (“ILRC”), a technical legal assistance provider for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and its 166 offices worldwide, engaged in several outreach activities during the ABA Annual Meeting in San Francisco this August. The aim was to increase membership of the ILRC database, currently populated by over 1,300 experts, and to introduce the rest of the ABA and other attending entities to the ILRC’s services. First off, a warm “thank you” goes out to Mark Wojcik, who showcased the ILRC during his program introducing ABA International to new members. The ILRC was also identified as a potential venue for cooperation during the Section leadership’s various meetings with representatives of bar associations from around the world. Lastly, close to 100 copies of the ILRC’s Annual Report, covering 2006 activities, were distributed during ABA International programs as well as during other events throughout the meeting. For a copy of the Annual Report please see http://www.abanet.org/intlaw/intlproj/ilrc/home.html. For more information about the ILRC, please contact the project’s director, Andreea Vesa, at +(202) 662-1668 or at vesaa@staff.abanet.org.

The newly formed Seasoned Lawyers Interest Network (SIN) met for the first time at the 2007 Annual Meeting. The consensus at the meeting was that SIN will have three primary functions: first, to provide mentoring to younger members, working closely with the Section’s Younger Lawyers Interest Network (YIN) to help navigate the ABA and provide career advice; second, to inform seasoned members of the Section of the pro bono and public service opportunities available to them with an emphasis on the international arena; and third, to sponsor programs at the Section’s seasonal meetings focusing on the second season of service. For more information on SIN and to join, visit the committees webpage at: http://www.abanet.org/dch/committee.cfm?com=IC600000.
The newly formed International Judicial Affairs Committee actively seeks to engage its members in activities that are designed to promote and strengthen the rule of law world-wide. The Committee's members are judges and lawyers practicing in jurisdictions around the world. The Committee's first and foremost task is simply to facilitate the exchange of information about issues and concerns affecting the judiciary in the members' respective countries. In addition, the committee works to develop opportunities for judges to work with fellow judges in other jurisdictions in mutually beneficial ways, including the development of administrative and substantive training programs for judges and for court staff, and, where appropriate, assistance in addressing court reform issues at a member's request. Within the United States, the Committee will also be available to meet with visiting judges from other countries, to provide hospitality and education about the functioning of the American legal system, and to confer about common issues facing courts. China Law Deskbook: A Legal Guide for Foreign-Invested Enterprises, Second Edition
China has developed, and continues to develop, a legal system from scratch in just over 20 years. So much has happened since the publication of the first edition of China Law Deskbook in 1999, and this second edition updates and expands upon the material presented in the original volume. The first edition was characterized in a book review by the Chicago Bar Association as a "must have, must read" for companies and practitioners involved in China.
The China Law Deskbook: A Legal Guide for Foreign-Invested Enterprises, Second Edition is a concise yet comprehensive resource to the complex laws of China. It opens with a thoughtful survey of the historical development of China's contemporary legal system. The following chapters summarize Chinese legislative and regulatory institutions and their functions, as well as the judicial and other forces affecting China's evolving legal system. The book highlights the key laws and regulations of interest and importance to foreign investors, corporate lawyers, and private practitioners involved in China on behalf of their clients.
Additional resources include the text of pertinent laws and regulations, as well as references to information accessible online. Valuable appendices contain contact information for U.S. and Chinese government resources, bar associations, international organizations, and other related organizations on Chinese legal and business efforts.
