The Section of International Law (ABA International) is looking forward to your arrival at the 2006 ANNUAL MEETING, August 4-6, in beautiful Honolulu, HI.  This email contains important information about negotiating and making the most of the meeting, so we encourage you to read it carefully.

We are delighted to report that over 400 ABA International Members are registered for the Annual Meeting and there is a large contingent of foreign lawyers who are attending the annual meeting as guests.  We already have outstanding attendance for all three of our ticketed events (described below) but it’s not too late to sign up for our two receptions and our dinner, each of which will be both fun and a memorable networking event.  We have arranged a slate of top notch speakers for our 14 CLE programs Friday through Sunday at the Hawaii Convention Center; you won’t want to miss them.  Remember, all CLE programs end by 1:00 PM accommodating both meeting and family time (or that important time on the golf course, tennis courts, snorkeling, or whatever).  For a list of our programs, please click here.

ABA Registration will be located in the Kamehameha III, Ground Level in the Hawaii Convention Center starting on Wednesday, August 2, from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. In the following days, registration will be open at 7:00 a.m.  Tickets to attend ABA International evening events are still available for sale at the registration counter.  If you have not signed up to attend these networking events, we suggest you do so while picking up your registration packets.  The Section will also have tickets for sale at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, South Pacific Ballroom I.  (See below for the office hours.) The events are:

  • Friday, August 4 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM, SDI 1 Joint Reception, “Beyond Borders” at the U.S. Army Museum - $50 per person:  This reception is co-sponsored with a number of other ABA Sections and will attract a large and interesting audience.
  • Saturday, August 5 from 7:00 -10:00 PM, SDI 2 International Law Section Dinner at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel - $95 per person:  The dinner is always a highlight of our portion of the Annual Meeting.
  • Sunday, August 6 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM, SDI 4 Closing Reception at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, Kalia Pool Terrace - $50 per person:  Another memorable networking event.

SPACE IS LIMITED…PURCHASE YOUR TICKETS WHEN PICKING UP YOUR REGISTRATION MATERIALS TO ASSURE THERE IS A SPACE FOR YOU!

The SECTION HEADQUARTERS will be located in the Hilton Hawaiian Village.   The ABA has provided continuous shuttle bus service daily from the Hawaii Convention Center to the ABA meeting hotels running every 20 minutes, and the hotel is a pleasant walk from the Convention Center. We encourage all registrants and international visitors to stop by our International Lawyers Loungein the South Pacific I Room at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.  Compliments of ABA International, there will be two high-speed computers for your convenience beginning Friday, August 4 through Sunday, August 6.  Come see what the Section has coming up in the months ahead!  There will be upcoming meeting flyers and other various giveaways to take with you.  The International Lounge and ticketed event purchase will be available during the following times throughout the meeting in the Hilton Hawaiian Village, South Pacific Ballroom I.:

  • Friday, August 4, 7:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, August 5, 7:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
  • Sunday, August 6, 7: 30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

The DRESS CODE for all events will be casual.   Hawaiian attire is recommended but not required.  We suggest wearing light clothing as it will be very warm during the day.  Men and women are not required to wear dress suits in program session or evening events.

Finally, we urge you to VOTE FOR BILL HANNAY in his candidacy for one of the at-large seats in the ABA House of Delegates.  The Section encourages all registrants at the Annual Meeting to vote for Bill (note: you must be at the Annual Meeting to vote).  For those that don’t know Bill, he is a former Chair of ABA International who has well served the Section for the last seven years as a very effective member of the House of Delegates.  Bill will bring substantial experience and a significant international perspective to the deliberations of the House in a period in which that body will be faced with more international issues than ever, coming not only from our Section, but from other Sections, other ABA entities and top ABA leadership.  Bill will also serve as a mentor to our two relatively new delegates.  More details on where to cast your vote for Bill Hannay will be given onsite. BILL’S ELECTION IS IMPORTANT TO ABA INTERNATIONAL, SO PLEASE DON’T FORGET TO CAST YOUR VOTE!
