About the Program

Program Chair: Steven Gardner, Kilpatrick Stockton, LLP, Winston-Salem, NC

About the Program

Intellectual property (IP) law is a complex practice area requiring a broad array of skills. The Practical Tips program is designed to enhance these skills and enable IP practitioners to handle the many tasks that routinely arise in this increasingly important area of practice. Unlike programs that deal principally with cutting-edge issues and recent court decisions, the Practical Tips program features top professionals from the IP field that provide practical advice on dealing with the "nuts and bolts" of every day IP practice. This Practical Tips program is sponsored by the Young Lawyers Committee of the ABA Section of Intellectual Property Law, in cooperation with The District of Columbia Bar Intellectual Property Law Section, .

This particular Practical Tips program examines patent practice, focusing primarily on patent preparation and prosecution, opinions relating to patents, and licensing. It is an "intermediate to advanced" level CLE course. As practical tips will be provided, those with one to twenty years of experience in the patent field will benefit from the program. As a special benefit to those attending the program, a number of "model" documents typically used in patent practice will be made available for future reference and possible adaptation for later use. In addition, outlines of issues relating to patent practice and other documents will be made available. These documents have been prepared by some of the nation=s leading patent attorneys and cover a wide variety of subjects.

CLE Credit

CLE accreditation has been requested for this program from every state with mandatory continuing education requirements for lawyers. Please be aware that each state has its own rules and regulations, including its definition of "CLE". Check with your state agency for confirmation of this program=s approval. States with lawyer specialization programs have not been requested to certify this program. Certificates of attendance will be available in the registration kits onsite. Attendees requesting credit for the program must sign the attendance roster onsite at the program. For information on approved number of credit hours, contact the ABA Center for CLE at 312-988-6217.
