ABA-IPL Committee Meetings at the 2007 ABA Annual Meeting

Get Involved--

In addition to our comprehensive and informative educational sessions, our Section committees will also be holding meetings to discuss activities, substantive issues and plans for the coming year. This is your opportunity to get actively involved in the work of the Section and its committees, and to check out committees in which you may be interested. All registrants to the ABA Annual Meeting are invited to participate in these committee meetings.

The following committee meetings are currently scheduled:

Friday, August 10

10:00 - 11:00 a.m.

    Committee 102 (International Patent Treaties and Laws)
    Mendocino Room I, 2nd Floor, Hotel Nikko San Francisco
    Our meeting will include a brief update from the Patent Harmonization, PCT issues, EPO issues, China issues, India issues, compulsory licensing, and genetic resources IP development subcommittees.  We plan to have discussions regarding potential resolutions and projects for the coming year.

10:00 - 11:00 a.m.

    Committee 108 (Patent System Policy Planning)
    Carmel Room II, 3rd Floor, Hotel Nikko San Francisco
    The Patent System Policy Planning Committee addresses basic improvements desired in the United States patent system and focuses in particular on long range planning for improvement in administration of the patent system, uniform patentability requirements, and the applicability of foreign patent law innovations to the U.S.  Past activities have included preparation of comments to the USPTO’s proposed long-range business plan and preparation of resolutions to address aspects of proposed or future patent reform legislation.

    Committee 356 (Special Committee on the Digital Millennium Copyright Act)
    Lincoln Boardroom, 25th Floor, Hotel Nikko San Francisco
    The Special Committee on the Digital Millennium Copyright Act focuses on its eponymous law, whose main provisions regulate the circumvention of technological protection measures on copyrighted works and limit the liability of online service providers for secondary copyright liability.  In this meeting, we will discuss plans for educational programs, policymaking, and litigation in the coming year.

11:00 a.m - 12:00 noon

    Committee 505 (Membership)
    Carmel Room I, 3rd Floor, Hotel Nikko San Francisco
    The Membership Committee is concerned with obtaining new members for the Section of Intellectual Property Law and cooperates with the American Bar Associations Committee on Membership. We will discuss initiatives for attracting new members. Those interested in joining the Committee are encouraged to attend.

11:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon

    Committee 355 (Special Committee on Online Copyright Issues)
    Lincoln Boardroom, 25th Floor, Hotel Nikko San Francisco
    Please join us for this planning meeting for the 2007-08 year.  We will discuss current issues involving copyright and the internet, including the legal issues raised by user generated content sites, and assign members to subcommittees to address these issues, as well as other related issues.

11:30 a.m - 12:30 noon

    Committee 502 (Ethics and Professional Responsibility)
    Carmel Room I, 3rd Floor, Hotel Nikko San Francisco

3:00 - 4:00 p.m.

    Committee 463 (Special Committee on Promotion and Marketing Law)
    Carmel Room I, 3rd Floor, Hotel Nikko San Francisco
    The meeting will cover recent developments in advertising and promotions law, including gift cards, rebates, text message promotions, and use of user-generated content in sweepstakes and contests. The committee will discuss possible activities for the upcoming committee year, including education programs about one or more of the foregoing.

4:00 - 5:00 p.m.

    Committee 709 (Software Development and Licensing)
    Lincoln Boardroom, 25th Floor, Hotel Nikko San Francisco
    Committee 709, Software Development & Licensing. Please join us for this planning meeting to get acquainted while we recap the accomplishments of the past year, consider potential resolutions and projects for the 2007-08 year, discuss the formation of subcommittees, and solicit volunteers to head those subcommittees.

3:00 – 4:30 p.m.

    Committee 710 (Databases and E-Commerce)
    Mendocino Room I, 2nd Floor, Hotel Nikko San Francisco
    Databases and e-Commerce Committee: The committee addresses databases and E-commerce, excluding online security and e-privacy issues. In this meeting we will plan to explore at least the following issues in 2007-08: (a) intellectual property in virtual worlds (the committee is charged with preparing a monograph on this subject this year); (b) "DeWitt" or "gagwrap" clauses in database software licenses; and (c) mapping technical aspects of database design to the Copyright Act's notions of selection, coordination, and arrangement.

4:00 - 5:00 p.m.

    Committee 509 (Pro Bono)
    Carmel Room II, 3rd Floor, Hotel Nikko San Francisco
    Committee 509 deals with pro bono matters. The committee has established a website listing pro bono resources available in the United States. The meeting is to discuss ways to improve the website, to increase the visibility of and traffic to the website, and also to discuss other projects that the committee may take up in the future.

4:30 – 5:00 p.m.

    Committee 408 (Interests of Individuals and Small Businesses)
    Carmel Room I, 3rd Floor, Hotel Nikko San Francisco
    This committee will explore the impact of intellectual property law on creative individuals and small businesses, including the challenges of obtaining, maintaining, and protecting intellectual property rights, e.g., copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets and patents, and potential liabilities associated with the use of intellectual property owned by others.

Sunday, August 12

8:00 - 9:00 a.m.

    Committee 601 (Trial and Appellate Rules and Procedure)
    Olympic Boardroom, 25th Floor, Hotel Nikko San Francisco
    This will be an organizational meeting to recap the accomplishments of the past year, discuss the formation of subcommittees, and solicit volunteers to head those subcommittees.

8:00 - 9:00 a.m.

    Committee 510 (Young Lawyers)
    Presidio Board Room, 25th Floor, Hotel Nikko San Francisco
