Membership Information
The American Bar Association Health Law Section is dedicated to increasing interest in the field of health law. Its over 10,000 members represent all areas of the health law industry and are committed to educating the legal profession in this rapidly changing area of practice.
History
In 1975, the ABA House of Delegates developed Forums, specialized areas of law not served by other entities in the Association. The Health Law Forum was the second such forum developed and made its debut in 1976. The Forum was to focus on legal problems and interdependent relationships between providers and recipients of health care and the parties financially responsible. In 1996, the Forum was granted Section status allowing it to expand its activities and continue its commitment to improving the area of law in health care. With the explosion in federal regulations, mergers and acquisitions and other critical issues affecting the health care industry, the Section's role in providing an arena for discussion has never been more necessary.
Membership
As of August 31, 2008, the Section had a membership of 7,888 lawyer members, 228 associates and 1,206 law students. Members practice in all areas of law with a special interest in the health care industry.
Publications
The Section has several publications geared toward providing its members with the information necessary to keep current with trends in health care law.
The Section's highly regarded newsletter, The Health Lawyer, is published six times a year. With topics ranging from proposed rule changes to effects of technology on health law to analyses of legislation, to mergers, The Health Lawyer is one of the most valued benefits of membership.
The Section has four very successful books, Health Care Fraud & Abuse: Practical Perspectives (Second Edition), E-Health Business and Transactional Law, Managed Care Litigation, and Pharmaceutical Law: Regulations of Research, Development, and Marketing, all four are published with BNA, Inc. In addition, the Section has established a Practical Guide Series.
CLE Programs
Providing opportunities for networking, fast dissemination information and discussion of cutting edge issues and in-depth analysis of trends in the industry is the goal of the Section's programming. The Section uses several vehicles for programming.
The Section sponsors and co-sponsors live programming on a variety of topics. Issues ranging from the latest on Medicare to health care antitrust to mergers and acquisitions are explored in live programs. Opportunities for meeting with colleagues is an important part of all of our live programs.
Teleconferences are being used to get information on cutting edge issues to our membership in the quickest turn-around time. Recently, the Section sponsored a basics teleconference series as well as teleconference on hot topics. This is a cost and time effective way to receive information.
The Section also sponsors Satellite Seminars, two or four-hour programs on current legal developments. The typical satellite program is presented much like a news program or Business Week in Review with a panel discussion coordinated by a program moderator. ERISA Basics and Healthcare Fraud and Abuse are examples of recent satellite seminars.
