Maryland Fair Share Health Care Access Legislation
"The Wal-Mart Bill"
Complimentary, non-CLE Teleconference
Tuesday, May 16, 2006
3:30-5:00 p.m. EDT
Dial: 800-504-8071
Code: 9885548
On January 12, 2006 both Houses of the Maryland Legislature overrode the Governor's veto of the Wal-Mart Bill passed during the 2005 legislative session. On February 7, 2006 a lawsuit was filed to block this legislation.
You are invited to participate in a national teleconference sponsored by the ABA Health Law Section Public Health and Policy Interest Group and the Public Health Law Association to learn about and discuss the Maryland Wal-Mart Legislation, the first in the nation, requiring companies in the state of Maryland that employ over 10,000 people to spend at least 8 percent of their payroll for employee health care. Large private employers which spend less than 8 percent are required to pay the difference to the state to help expand the number of people eligible for Medicaid. Although there are three for-profit entities and one not-for-profit employer covered by the law, Wal-Mart appears to be the only covered employer which does not qualify for a full credit.
Moderated by Dr. Martin Wasserman, former Secretary of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and current Board Member of the Public Health Law Association, this teleconference will feature the following panelists:
Senator Gloria Lawlah
Chairman, Health, Education, and Human Resources of the State Budget and Taxation Committee Maryland State Legislature
Robert Worcester
President
Maryland Business for Responsive Government
Vincent DeMarco
Executive Director
Maryland Citizen's Health Initiative
Phyllis Borzi, Esq.
Research Professor
Center for Health Services Research and Policy George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services
Due to the limited number of lines available for this call, we recommend that you dial in early and share phone lines where convenient. This is a complimentary, non-CLE teleconference.
