A Message from the Membership Committee Chair

Darcee Siegel
GPSLD Membership Committee Chair
As an Assistant City Attorney for North Miami Beach, I understand your daily pressures and realize that you don’t have the time to ferret out information about the “big picture” issues that affect your government practice and public lawyers in general. That’s why I value my membership in the Government and Public Sector Lawyers Division - because it conveniently delivers information specific to my needs - information that I can not easily obtain elsewhere.

Membership in this division costs only $40.00 per year for lawyer and associate members - less than 77 cents per week. (You must be a member of the ABA to join the Division. Click here to join the ABA. Please note that lawyers in public service are eligible for reduced ABA dues. To add Division membership to your ABA membership, click here.)

When I want to find out what is going on with public lawyers nationwide, I turn to the benefits that I receive as a member of this Division:

  • Publications that keep you current on issues such as government attorney-client privilege, law school loan repayment assistance programs, the hiring of private outside counsel, politically motivated dismissals, transitioning to private practice and more;
  • Members-only Public Law Office Management webpage offers resources on improving communication with your clients, dealing with the media, obtaining grants for office programs, supervising employees, and mentoring programs. You'll also find tips, quizzes, surveys and a way for members to send in their suggestions;
  • Nationally acclaimed CLE programs on the unique ethical issues confronting public lawyers and public law office management topics;
  • Division Pro Bono webpage features a step-by-step guide to creating a government office pro bono program; sample federal, state, and local government office policies; relevant articles; and other helpful links;
  • Conveniently speak with your peers on topics relevant to your practice on the Division’s members-only email discussion group;
  • Members-only access to the Public Lawyer Career Center webpage allows members to connect with experienced mentors, access a comprehensive list of public law offices and job listings and download career development resources;
  • Meet and network with public lawyers from around the country at Division meetings and receptions held several times a year.

This Division helps to break through the clutter in my life by providing relevant information about my practice and about issues that affect public lawyers nationwide. Join me and thousands of other public lawyers by calling the ABA Service Center at 1-800-285-2221 to become a member. If you have questions, please call Kiren Jahangeer at 202-662-1023. We look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Darcee S. Siegel
Chair, Membership Committee
