CLE Programs for Public Lawyers

The Division regularly presents CLE programs on topics of specific interest to public lawyers.

Ethical Considerations in Public Sector Law CLE focuses on the unique ethical issues confronted by public lawyers using an entertaining, interactive format. Panelists dramatize short, illustrative hypothetical scenarios with a discussion period following each skit. Topics include: scope of representation, public sector attorney-client privilege issues, candor toward the tribunal, responsibilities of supervisory lawyers, special conflicts of interest for government employees, meritorious claims and contentions, and more.

Public Law Office Management 101: Strategies, Solutions and Ethics Rule Implications CLE examines issues and skills relevant to managing a successful public law office, such as: recruiting tips; retention strategies; ensuring a productive, motivated staff; supervisory skills; and developing and maintaining excellent client relations. Panelists use real-life, humorous scenarios and a lively audience discussion to delve into the topics.

Pathways to Success for Women and Minorities in the Public Sector features a diverse panel of public lawyer-leaders who describe their current positions and discuss the obstacles, encouragement, and serendipitous events that helped them achieve success.

The Division works with state and local bar groups to present these programs across the country. These seminars are an easy, inexpensive way to provide programs specifically designed for public lawyers in your community.

If you are interested in exploring the possibility of presenting the program in your community, please contact Division Director Susan Kidd at 202-662-1022 or susankidd@staff.abanet.org.
