Lift Yourself Up
BY JENNIFER J. ROSE
Adding a Doberman pinscher to her office staff, jennifer rose practiced law in the bucolic cornfields of Iowa for 20 years before moving to Mexico. A freelance writer and editor-in-chief of The Compleat Lawyer, she can be reached at jenniferrose@abanet.org.
Even though you can't change the seamier side of the practice, you can change your perspective by simply and temporarily leaving the world of your practice on a regular basis.
- Take an avenue of escape between home and office by doing something that's completely out of your lawyer persona.
- Watch a silly comedy.
- Find peace and beauty in tending a rose garden.
- Burn off that fury by chopping wood.
- Learn how to tap dance, lay brick, or speak Italian.
- Strive for the disciplined solace of running marathons.
- Paint. Bake. Sculpt. Act.
- Raise goats.
- Volunteer for Habitat for Humanity.
- Sing in a barbershop quartet.
- Become a Den Parent.
- Go to a klezmer festival.
Do anything that reassures you that there's a world out there beyond the practice of law -- you'll be a far better lawyer by spending less time as one.
