Working in Radio

While most of my classmates are hard at work at law firms or the local chapter of the ACLU, I spend a chunk of my free time working in radio. I waited seven years between college and law school. Some of that time was spent at nonprofits, but most of it was spent working full-time for commercial radio stations. I love music, I love communication, and I love radio people (in all their quirkiness). This was an important part of my life that I didn’t want to give up just because I was going back to school.

Within weeks of quitting my full-time radio job and starting law school, I was looking for a part-time radio job. It was something I knew I needed to do to keep my sanity. Also, it was a link between my previous life and my current life. It’s difficult to move to a new city, meet new people, and then top it off with law school.

I now work part-time for WCPN, Cleveland’s National Public Radio affiliate. Twice a week I head into the building where Allan Freed coined the term “rock-n-roll,” and I feel connected to one of my passions that lies far outside of law school. Sure, I could make more money (and probably learn more about torts) by working at a downtown firm, but I wouldn’t have the chance to wear the headphones and have people ask me to do my “radio voice.”
