DIVISION NEWS
GENERAL PRACTICE, SOLO AND SMALL FIRM

We Are a Division!

The General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Section is now the General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Division.

Recognizing that most of America’s lawyers practice in a solo or small firm setting, the American Bar Association is committing itself to offering more and better service to America’s Main Street Lawyers as they build their practices and serve their clients. Visit our website (www.abanet.org/genpractice) to read a letter from ABA President Michael S. Greco on GP|Solo’s transformation to a Division.

Fall Meeting Wrap-Up

GP|Solo Division Chair Dwight L. Smith and New England Bar Association President Richard C. Van Nostrand welcomed attorneys from across the United States to Boston for the 2005 Fall Meeting. Highlights of the meeting included a plenary session led by ABA President Michael S. Greco, the Difference Maker Dinner, and a tour of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library.

Congratulations to the 2005 Difference Maker Winners

The Difference Maker Awards honor the hard work of attorneys dedicated to changing the profession of law for the better. The awards ceremony and dinner were held during the 2005 Fall Meeting in Boston. Honorees were:

Professional Achievement: ABA President Michael S. Greco

Diversity and Professional Achievement: Honorable Sandra L. Lynch, First Circuit Court of Appeals

Lifetime Achievement: Honorable William T. Hogan Jr. (ret.)

Hurricane Katrina Relief

Midyear Update

The ABA Board of Governors has decided to move the Midyear Meeting to Chicago, Illinois, February 8 to 13, 2006. (Please note that the meeting dates, as well as the location, have been changed.)

The ABA Meetings and Travel Department investigated a number of alternative locations. After extensive research, the Hyatt Regency Chicago proved to be the best alternative, given the shortness of time and the desire to house our entire meeting in one facility in order to minimize logistical difficulties. By relocating the Midyear Meeting, we anticipate realizing savings, which we will contribute to an appropriate fund for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. We are pleased that the Hyatt Regency Chicago is joining us in this effort by donating ten dollars per occupied room night to the relief fund we select.

A new website for the Midyear Meeting will be available via the ABA website (www.abanet.org). Those who have already registered and made hotel reservations for New Orleans through ITS will receive a new hotel confirmation for the Hyatt Regency Chicago and meeting registration confirmation. Your hotel deposit also will be transferred. Once the Midyear website is posted, you will receive a communication alerting you and encouraging you to visit the site to make any changes or revisions to your registration, or—if you have not done so—to register for the meeting.

Books

GP|Solo’s book program is rolling. We have quite a few new releases, including the following:

The Complete Guide to Divorce Practice, third edition, by Larry Rice. Whether you’re just starting out or want to build up your document library, this proven system is a winning strategy for your family law practice.

Letters for Bankruptcy Lawyers: Essential Communication for Clients, Creditors, Opposing Counsel and Others by Joel Pelofsky and Marc S. Stern, and the downloadable e-product Nine Traps and One Slap by Catherine E. Vance and Corinne Cooper. The new bankruptcy law will dramatically increase the risk to attorneys practicing consumer bankruptcy law. These two new books will help bring you up to speed
