Solo and Small Firm Day 2003
You won't want to miss Solo and Small Firm Day 2003-99 Tips to
Being an Effective Lawyer-on Friday, August 8, from 9:30 A.M.
until 5:45 P.M. This year's program will be at the Presidential
CLE Centre, Moscone Center South. The sessions will include:
60 Websites in 60 minutes
Carole Levitt is the author of Internet Fact Finder for Lawyers
and speaks to audiences throughout the United States about the
Internet. The seminar will provide you with low-cost and free
websites to save time and money in your practice, including free
case law sites that uncover bankruptcies, Social Security
numbers, and even your mother's maiden name.
What Color Is Your Undershirt?
Lisa Miller, a consultant and accomplished attorney from
California, clarifies the four basic business development
approaches for the four basic personality types and prescribes
the activities that are the most comfortable for these
practitioners.
Negotiation Strategies for Lawyers
Myer Sankary (past chair of the California Solo and Small Firm
Division) and Steve Melita will share their secrets for strategic
negotiations and settlement advocacy in a very fast-paced
program. Mr. Sankary is currently the owner of a mediation
service in California and has been in private practice for more
than 36 years.
Dos and Don'ts when Dealing with the Media
Sarina Butler (Associate Executive Director of the Communications
Group of the ABA) and Gail Alexander White (the coordinator of
the efforts of the Chicago and Washington staff of the ABA
Division for Media Relations and Communication Services) will
conduct a one-hour workshop and share their expertise on how to
deal with the media.
60 PDA Tips in 45 minutes
Martin Dean, a California attorney integrally involved with
computers and technology, will discuss the need for a personal
digital assistant and whether it can replace your laptop.
Using Paralegals for Profitability
Carolyn Yellis, a paralegal since 1983, will provide an overview
of how to best utilize your paralegal. Joining Ms. Yellis will be
Kimberly K. Larsen, an attorney with 15 years' experience
representing clients in employment, business, and real estate
disputes as both a transactional attorney and a
litigator/mediator.
Ethics and Client Trust Accounting
This program explaining how to keep records using QuickBooks will
be presented by Mark Tuft (a senior partner with Cooper, White
& Cooper, LLP, in San Francisco) and Myer Sankary. The
program will concentrate on the ethical obligations associated
with handling clients' funds and property.
Networking Reception-How to Use Your Gift of Gab to Network
Effectively
After a long day of learning, join us for a "working" networking
reception led by Nancy Meeks, an expert in effective networking.
Ms. Meeks will teach us the common networking "tricks" to use at
a cocktail party. After learning her secrets, we will test them
out at a reception co-sponsored by the ABA Standing Committee on
Solo and Small Firm Practitioners. For additional information,

Section Headquarters at Annual Meeting
Our Section will be headquartered in the beautiful Hotel Nikko in
the heart of San Francisco, just steps from Union Square, great
shopping, and the theater district. Within walking distance you
will find the Moscone Center, the Museum of Modern Art, South of
Market (SOMA), and the financial district. If you want to venture
out to see more of San Francisco, use the BART, MUNI, and cable
cars located less than two blocks away. If you want more
