The Long-Term View

When people ask how my mediation business is going, I respond that it’s growing but thank goodness I have my law practice to pay the bills. I know that some former judges and retired lawyers have highly successful, full-time mediation practices, with more work than they can handle. But for those of us who have not been judges and lack sufficient amounts of grey hair, building a mediation practice is a long-term, slow-growth venture.

After four years of hard work, false starts, and missteps, my mediation partners and I have found our niche and are seeing more mediation work come in. It has a long way to go to eclipse our law practices, but it is showing promise as an income-producing venture over the next five years. So, if you are considering leaving your law practice to become a mediator, stop and consider the advice I’m glad I took: Don’t quit your day job.
