Our program began on Friday May 2, 2008 at 9:30 AM with an outstanding CLE Program that was co-sponsored by the Division and the Commission on Domestic Violence. Judge Brown served as the moderator, and other panelist included Bernadette D'Souza, Managing Attorney, New Orleans Legal Assistance, Joan Miller, Director of Project Save, Melanie Talie, Assistant District Attorney New Orleans Parish and Professor Tania Tetlow, Tulane Law Domestic Violence Clinic. The program was free and all attendees received CLE Credit. There were approximately 20 persons in attendance.

In the early afternoon volunteers took a tour of the Family Justice Center located in a renovated fire station. The GP Solo Division graciously supported the Day Service by providing a wonderful New Orleans style lunch for all of the participants in the public service project that took place that afternoon. After lunch the volunteers went to two different sites. At the Family Justice Center the volunteers painted a play room. They included Jay Ray, Rev. Al Miles and others.

In addition, members went to the Crescent House Healing Center where our leader, Keith McLennan joined by Bruce Hopson, Laura Farber, Jennifer Ator, Kathleen Hopkins, Judge Pamila Brown, Artika Tyner, David Levesque, Jamie Hawk, Jim Goodwin, Julia Strange, Rebecca Henry, and others worked throughout the afternoon. The weather held up for us and the volunteers helped assemble a huge playset as well as raked, mulched, and cleaned the huge front yard of this Victorian era age house.

At each site the volunteers received a token of appreciation and many thanks from the staff. In addition, several donations were made by Division members to support the work of the Centers.

»Law Student Event: How to Get a Job in a Small Firm

GP|Solo is fortunate to have a large number of law student members, and we certainly want to show our appreciation to them! At the GP|Solo’s 2008 Spring Meeting in New Orleans, a special presentation entitled “How to Get a Job in a Small Firmrdquo; was held at Loyola University New Orleans's College of Law. Law students from all over the state heard from a panel of members discuss their experiences as a solo and small firm lawyer and the qualifications that they look for in an applicant.

Patricia Sexton, GP|Solo Membership Board Chair, moderated the following panel of members:

  • Stacy Auzenne – Owner, Auzenne Law Firm, LLC
  • Laura V. Farber - Hiring Partner, Hahn & Hahn, LLP
  • Elio Martinez - Partner, Concepcion, Sexton & Martinez, P.A.
  • Keith B. McLennan - Partner, Miller, Turetsky, Rule & McLennan, P.C.
  • Iran Thompson, II – Frischhertz and Associates, LLC

Sexton asked questions to the panel for approximately one hour and then a Q&A followed for approximately forty-five minutes. The questions asked during the session varied from “Where to look for a job in a small firm?” to “How to approach small firms about clerkships or permanent positions?” The enthusiasm of the students prompted an immediate follow-up after the discussion. Many students approached the panelists for a private one-on-one consultation. The GP|Solo Division plans to present this program throughout the year, including at the ABA's 2008 Annual Meeting this August in New York City.
