Midyear Meeting CLE

Friday, February 11, 2005

2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
CLE: Service Members Civil Relief Act

The Service members Civil Relief Act (SCRA), was signed into law by President George W Bush on December 19, 2003. The SCRA represents a complete restatement, in modern legislative language, of the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Act of 1940, which had been amended numerous times since its adoption before the beginning of World War II. The Military Law Committee of the GP|Solo Section is proud to present an exciting new look at the SCRA. The program will feature an overview of the new civil procedure protections followed by a panel discussion by subject matter experts. Professor Greg Huckabee from the University of South Dakota (who served as the Dept. of Defense SCRA Task Force Chairman 1990-92) will provide an introduction and overview.

4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Simplifying the Process of Operating a Solo Law Practice
Sponsored by the Young Lawyers Division

Edward Poll simplifies the often-complex process of operating a law practice so that anyone who follows these simple yet effective rules will become more effective in connecting with clients and becoming more profitable.
This session will  provide you with an easy and thoroughly practical system for developing and implementing a workable and realistic business plan that can be used - and adapted - constantly. It also addresses the pressing issues that practitioners face today: marketing, personnel issues, technology, time management, clients' trust accounting, opening a new office, and changing from one practice to another, such as moving from a large firm to a solo or small firm environment. It also highlights two informative case studies: Starting a Family Law Practice and Opening a Home-Based Practice. The plan focuses on three key components of determining your goals, understanding how to market your practice, and understanding the basics of finance so you can control your bottom line.
