On April 24, 2008 at the Construction Forum's Annual meeting in la Quinta, CA, one of our most esteemed members was awarded our highest honor, the Cornerstone Award. Ava Abramowitz of Leesburg, VA was recognized for his tremendous contributions to Construction Law. A former assistant United States attorney for the District of Columbia and a teacher of negotiations at the George Washington University Law School and the Catholic University School of Architecture and Planning, Ava J. Abramowitz has been serving as a mediator for the federal courts for the District of Columbia since the late eighties, mediating a diverse assortment of civil cases from international and domestic corporate cases to those involving intellectual property and employment discrimination, all of which have placed a premium on negotiation skills. Since leaving her position as a vice president of Victor O. Schinnerer & Company, Inc., the underwriting manager of the CNA Insurance Companies, architects and engineers professional liability insurance program, Ms. Abramowitz has mediated insurance disputes and has also served as an owner,s representative on residential construction projects.
Formerly the deputy general counsel of The American Institute of Architects, Ms. Abramowitz is the author of The Architect,s Essentials of Contract Negotiation (John Wiley & Sons 2002). A senior fellow of the Design Futures Council, she is also a founding fellow of the American College of Construction Lawyers and is currently serving on its Board of Governors. Additionally, she has been nominated to serve as the first public member of the National Council of Architecture Registration Boards beginning in July 2008. A former member of the Governing Committee of the American Bar Association,s Forum on the Construction Industry, Ms. Abramowitz is the 2008 recipient of the Forum,s Cornerstone Award, the highest award for service given by the Forum. Previously she served on the board of directors of The National Museum of Women in the Arts and the National Architectural Accrediting Board. Ms. Abramowitz is a graduate of Brandeis University and the George Washington University National Law Center.
Most recently, in Loudoun County, Ms. Abramowitz oversaw operations of Wheatland Farms, LLC including the restoration of the many 18th and 19th century buildings found on it, including a seven-time design award-winning log cabin. She has also served on the Loudon County Zoning Ordinance Review Committee and on the Rural Economic Development Committee. In her spare time she and her husband, Neil Rackham, walk the Appalachian Trail with their two Irish wolfhounds, Bartleby and Balderdash.
Dave Owen has more than 20 years of business experience including web design, computer technology, engineering, consulting (Andersen Consulting), and transportation logistics (American President Lines). His clients have included such organizations as Georgia-Pacific, Motorola, Boeing, US West, US Air Force, and Sears. Currently, he is President of ImageServe, a 13-year-old Web Development firm in Atlanta. Dave received a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the University of Central Florida and an MBA from Emory University. Dave is active in the Atlanta Business and Alumni community where he often speaks on Internet Business issues. Most recently, he served as President of the Atlanta Chapter of the Business Marketing Association.
