Cornerstone Award 2009 - Deborah Griffin Receives Cornerstone Award for 2009

On April 16, 2009 at the Construction Forum's Annual meeting in New Orleans, LA, one of our most esteemed members was awarded our highest honor, the Cornerstone Award. Deborah Griffin of Boston, MA was recognized for her tremendous contributions to Construction Law. Deborah is Senior Counsel in the Litigation Group of Holland & Knight and concentrates her practice in the area of construction, commercial litigation and bankruptcy. She regularly advises contractors, owners and sureties on construction contract, administration and claim matters and handles construction disputes from start to finish.

Deborah's experience includes the representation of contractors, construction managers, owners, sureties, banks and bank regulators in loan and contract default situations, both before and during litigation or bankruptcy proceedings. She has helped draft a contract addendum for the use of building information modeling (BIM) on construction projects which has been published as ConsensusDOCS form 301.

Her practice includes: structuring project delivery methods and reviewing, structuring and negotiating construction, design and construction management contracts; advising clients on contract interpretation and contract and project administration for commercial, institutional, and public building projects and public works projects; claim avoidance counseling; public procurement laws and bid protests; construction industry labor and employment issues; OSHA and building code matters; change order management; project close-out management; assessment, preparation and defense of claims; litigation and arbitration of construction related disputes; contract default management and providing general business advice to construction industry clients.

Deborah is an active member of the National Association of Women in Construction and the American Bar Association. Since 1984, Deborah has served on the Governing Committee of the ABA's Forum on the Construction Industry and has been a vice chair of the Fidelity and Surety Law Committee of the ABA's Torts and Insurance Practice Section. She is a fellow of the American College of Construction Lawyers. She lectures and writes nationally on bankruptcy, construction law and complex litigation topics. Deborah is a professionally trained mediator and is on the National Construction Panel of Arbitrators for the American Arbitration Association.

Deborah attended Bryn Mawr College, where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree cum laude in 1971. She earned her J.D. in 1974 from Boston University, where she was Member of Law Review.

Dave Owen has 25 years of business experience including web design, computer technology, engineering, consulting (Accenture), and transportation logistics (American President Lines). His clients have included such organizations as Georgia-Pacific, Motorola, Boeing, US West, US Air Force, and Sears. Currently, he is President of ImageServe, a 14-year-old Web Development and Multimedia firm based in Atlanta, GA and Orlando, FL. Dave received a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the University of Central Florida and an MBA from Emory University. Dave is active in the Atlanta and Orlando Business and Alumni community where he often speaks on Internet Business issues. Most recently, he served as President of the Atlanta Chapter of the Business Marketing Association.
