In the 7-4, en banc decision of Hosty v. Carter, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit on June 20, 2005, said the Supreme Court's 1988 Hazelwood decision limiting high school student free expression rights could extend to college and university campuses. However, the Court did not reach the fundamental question of just what level of First Amendment protection college journalists are entitled.
