Program Overview:
Much has been said and written over the past several years about the promise that nanotechnology offers. Diverse industry sectors from medicine, energy, remediation, and many more are all beneficiaries of this powerful new technology that harnesses the power of the incredibly tiny. While nanotechnology is described as the "understanding and control of matter at dimensions of roughly 1 to 100 nanometers, where unique phenomena enable novel applications," it is not immediately apparent what this means or why environmental, energy, and resource lawyers and others should care. Nor is it immediately evident why the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) and other health and safety organizations globally are interested in the implications of exposure to engineered nanoparticles, nanostructures, and nanomaterials.
This first in a series of eight quick teleconferences (QT) in the Nano QT series will provide a concise overview of the science of nanotechnology, including the physical and chemical properties of nanoscale materials, manufacturing methods, and industrial applications, to enable legal practitioners and others to understand better why a thorough grounding in the science of nanotechnology is a fundamental prerequisite to understanding the vexing legal, regulatory, and science policy issues that are now being discussed by regulators, law makers, and others around the world.
Educational Objectives:
- Brief participants on the fundamental science of engineered nanostructures.
- Evaluate the implication for environmental regulation.
