Program Overview:
This Quick Teleconference will provide a roundtable discussion by government officials and private attorneys on environmental enforcement trends in 2006, and EPA’s new enforcement priorities due out for public comment in February, 2007. EPA and the Department of Justice released their enforcement statistics for 2006, but what do those statistics really represent? Are civil or criminal enforcement actions on the rise or do the numbers suggest a downward trend? The panel will provide an in-depth analysis of the stories behind the 2006 numbers, and how those numbers will influence resources priorities for the coming year. Featured topics will include, EPA’s 2006 civil enforcement priority areas including wet weather events, air toxics, new source review, and petroleum refineries, and 2006 criminal enforcement priorities including DOJ’s vessel pollution prosecutions and EPA’s new web based “tip” line. The speakers will also discuss the link between 2006 enforcement results and priorities area for 2008-2011. The teleconference represents an excellent opportunity to hear first hand the types of enforcement activities the regulated community can expect from these agencies in the coming year.
Educational Objectives:
The teleconference is intended to educate the private practitioners about environmental enforcement trends. It will provide analysis on important enforcement actions of the previous year and new enforcement priorities at EPA and DOJ.
