Program Overview:
The Indian Tribal Energy Development and Self-Determination Act of 2005, enacted as Title V of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, is intended to empower Indian tribal governments in the development of their energy resources. Most reservations have some renewable energy resources, and many have non-renewable resources, which can be developed both to meet local needs and to engage in regional and national energy markets. The Act directs both the Department of the Interior (DOI) and the Department of Energy (DOE) to provide assistance, and the speakers will report on progress in implementing the Act and the opportunities ahead for energy resource development on tribal lands.
Educational Objectives:
- To offer information from key federal officials on implementation of the 2005 Act.
- To provide an opportunity to ask federal officials to answer questions.
- To discuss the implications of the legislation for companies doing business with tribes.
