Program Overview:
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fourth Assessment Report projected that climate change will subject hundreds of millions of people throughout the world to serious impacts in the coming decades and that low adaptive capacity in many of the poorest countries will make their populations particularly vulnerable. This program will explore the ethical and environmental justice dimensions of climate change. The speakers will raise questions such as who is ethically responsible for the consequences of climate change and what ethical principles should guide the choice of specific climate change policy objectives. The program will also examine how traditional concepts of environmental justice can be applied to climate change. The speakers will discuss practical applications of ethics and environmental justice to international law and national legislation. There will be specific consideration of the Inuit Circumpolar Conference Petition to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, the Buenos Aires Declaration on the Human Dimensions of Climate Change, federal climate bills with justice-related provisions, and options for incorporating more specific requirements into federal climate change law to address the needs of environmental justice communities.
Educational Objectives:
- Provide the audience with an in-depth understanding of the ethical and environmental justice dimensions of climate change
- Survey the major legal developments in domestic and international climate justice
- In a legal context, examine the ethical imperative for taking action on climate change
