Eastern Water Resources:
Emerging Issues in Competition, Science and Politics

May 11, 2006
Hyatt Regency
Miami, Florida

Early Registration

Early registration has been extended to April 19, 2006.

About the Conference
Allocation of water resources is no longer considered solely a western issue. Water quality has historically been the critical issue in the east, with allocation taking a backseat in this water-rich region. This scenario is changing. Eastern water supplies have become increasingly erratic due to overuse, development patterns, short-term droughts and long-term climatic changes. These challenges have revealed significant shortcomings in current water laws and the legal procedures eastern states typically employ to allocate surface and groundwater supplies. This will be the only Conference this year to focus on the unique water resource issues facing the eastern United States. Join your colleagues and hear some of the country’s leading experts from government, public interest organizations, academia, non-governmental organizations and the private sector discuss some of the most critical legal and scientific issues in eastern water law. A special keynote luncheon presentation will provide EPA’s perspective on these emerging issues.

Who Should Attend
The conference will be of interest to anyone involved in water issues in the eastern United States, including lawyers, consultants, developers, businesses utilizing large quantities of waters, public utilities, government policy makers and planners, tribal governments and academics. There will be many opportunities to meet and talk with the speakers and fellow attendees interested in eastern water rights issues.

Highlights:

  • Introductory session on key eastern mechanisms to protect stream flow
  • A plenary session discussing the science involved in eastern water regulation
  • A breakout session covering the nuts and bolts of eastern water law
  • A breakout session discussing the relationship between water quality and quantity
  • A breakout session on the latest legal battles over water supply in the east
  • A breakout session providing an in-depth discussion of scientific principles involved in regulation
  • A plenary session of the latest political issues involved in eastern water law
  • Keynote Luncheon Speaker, Benjamin H. Grumbles (invited), Assistant Administrator, Office of Water, United States Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, D.C. who will speak about the EPA's perspective on eastern water issues
