Katrina Recovery - A series of Quick Teleconferences sponsored by the Section of Environment, Energy and Resources and the Health Law Section; a volunteer effort to provide expertise and resources to those working to rebuild areas devastated by recent hurricanes. This series has been underwritten, in part, by ConferTel, our conference call provider, so that attorneys and public officials in affected areas of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida can participate for FREE. These presentations will be recorded, posted to www.abanet.org/environ/katrina, and archived for future use. Third in the Series:
Health Impacts of Katrina & Rita: The Lingering Aftermath
Program Overview:
Hurricanes Katrina and Rita have impacted public health in the wide swath of their destructive paths. What are the short and long term health effects? What effects are acute and which are likely to be chronic? Drinking water, wastewater, solid and hazardous waste, sediments and soil contamination, occupational health & safety, public security, vector/rodent/animal control, food safety … all these present potential health risks. What are the sources, pathways of exposure and methods of control for the biologic, physical and chemical agents impacting human health in the affected areas? How can we assess the human health risk? How can we effectively communicate about risk and methods for protecting those exposed? Our panel is composed of professionals with experience from past hurricanes and other natural disasters. Juxtaposing the effects on the environment with the health of the citizens from the impacted areas, the panel will identify and discuss the intersection of potential negative effects.
