Law Student Writing Competition

Law Student Writing Competition Rules

  • Nominations must be submitted to the Section by the professor teaching the relevant class. Individual self-nominations will not be accepted.
  • The Section Law Student Committee will review the nominations and select three semi-finalist classes. Selection will be based on an examination of seminars that will result in original research and or analysis. Classes that produce only "mock briefs" will be excluded from the competition. Acceptance of class nominations will be based on:
    1. complexity of topic
    2. the relevancy or timeliness of the subject
    3. originality of the topic and prospective theses
    4. projected quality of research and support for thesis.
  • Upon selection of the three law schools, the Committee will notify the professor(s) that their class has been selected as a semifinalist.
  • At the conclusion of the semester the professors are to forward the Section the five papers that received the highest grades, along with completed publication agreements.
  • The Committee will anonymously judge the papers based on:
    1. quality of writing
    2. appropriate ratio of analysis to background
    3. quality of research and support for thesis
  • The Committee reserves the right to publish less than nine papers if it determines the submissions are not of sufficient quality
