2008 Diversity Fellowship in Environmental Law

Hawaii

The Fellowship:

Sponsored by The Hawai‘i State Bar Association Natural Resources Section and the ABA Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources

• A stipend to spend the summer of 2008 (8-10 weeks) working on legal matters for a government environmental agency or non-profit/public interest environmental organization in Hawai‘i. One fellowship will be awarded.
• Participation in monthly meetings of the HSBA Natural Resources Section.
• Assignment of a mentor from the environmental bar.

Eligibility:
First-year and second-year students who are: (1.a) enrolled in a law school in Hawai‘i; or (1.b) permanent Hawai‘i residents enrolled in law school, AND (2) who will contribute to increasing diversity in the Hawai‘i environmental bar.

Fellowship Criteria:
Interest in environmental issues; academic record (undergraduate and/or law school); outstanding personal qualities; leadership abilities; ability to contribute to diversity in the Hawai‘i environmental bar. A law school course in environmental law is not a prerequisite.

Applications must contain a completed application form; a resume; a law school transcript (an unofficial transcript is acceptable); a one-page double spaced essay describing the applicant's reasons for wanting to participate in the Fellowship, interest in environmental issues, and ability to contribute to diversity in the environmental bar; and two references (formal letters of recommendation are not required, just contact information).

Application Deadline: Postmarked by April 25, 2008 (fellows will be selected by the Natural Resources Section and notified by May 16, 2008). Fellows must provide proof of acceptable employment with a governmental environmental agency or public interest environmental organization by May 30, 2008.
