Representatives of EPA Region 7 have indicated that they are "seriously considering" initiating an investigation into potential New Source Review violations by electric utilities within the region in upcoming months. The investigation reportedly will focus on "major modifications" made by utilities without undergoing New Source Review and likely will begin with the issuance of Clean Air Act Section 114 requests for information to various utilities in the region. Region 7's utility New Source Review initiative follows similar initiatives by EPA headquarters and other EPA regional offices. Region 7's last major New Source Review initiative, which was launched in 2000 and is still ongoing, focused on the grain processing industry.
