Message from the Chair

Greetings and welcome to the start of the 2006-2007 ABA term. In my first term as Chair of the Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources' Agricultural Management Committee, I am pleased to provide this brief overview of the Committee's recent accomplishments and upcoming activities, and urge you to get involved in various Committee activities. Active committee members and vice-chairs consistently report that their practices are enhanced by the information shared and relationships formed by participation. Please join us in an activity and enhance your practice as well as those of fellow Committee members.

The Committee welcomes our newest vice chair, Shawna Bligh, an attorney with The Session Law Firm, who will serve as the Committee's Vice Chair for Technology.

This year the Agricultural Management Committee is publishing a committee newsletter regarding concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) with particular emphasis on liability issues, "right to farm" statutes and insurance availability. This Fall, we are also publishing a joint committee newsletter with the International Environmental Law Committee on the international implications of United States agriculture.

Please contact me or newsletter Vice Chair Tom Redick if you wish to contribute an article to an upcoming issue of the Agricultural Management Committee Newsletter. Likewise, please contact me or Program Vice Chair, Daniel M. Krainin if you wish to suggest topics for upcoming Committee programs.

We look forward to seeing folks at the 15th Section Fall Meeting in Pittsburgh, September 26-30, 2007.

Thank you, and please do not hesitate to contact me with your suggestions for Committee activities. We look forward to your support and participation for another productive year.

Chair, Agricultural Management Committee

About the Committee

The Agricultural Management Committee was founded in 1996 to address cutting-edge issues in managing the environmental impacts of agriculture. The Committee focuses on developments in federal and state legislation, regulation, litigation and policy related to agricultural environmental management, including: agricultural biotechnology; Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs); the federal farm bill; agricultural run-off/non-point water pollution; sustainable agriculture; food quality, safety and homeland security; conservation easements, agricultural wetlands, valuation methodologies for agricultural biodiversity; agriculture and international trade; and regulations, enforcement and other developments affecting agriculture under the federal Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), Endangered Species Act, the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA); Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), and state equivalents. The Committee regularly sponsors programs and publishes a newsletter that covers these and other environmental aspects of agricultural management.
