2008 ABA Annual Meeting

August 7-12, 2008

The ABA Annual Meeting will be held in New York City from August 7-12, 2008, with Section activities on August 8-10, 2008.

All Section leaders are invited and encouraged to attend the Council Meeting on Saturday, August 9, 2008 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Please respond by fax as soon as possible regarding your plans to attend the Council Meetings and the Sunday evening social event.

Section Council and Leadership Information

Council Business Meeting Agenda and Committee Reports
All 07-08 officers are asked to provide written reports for the Council Meeting. If you would like something specific added to the Council meeting agenda, please let Lee DeHihns and Dana Jonusaitis know by July 18, 2008.

All 07-08 committee chairs are expected to provide a final progress report on their committee’s Action Plan to their Council Liaisons by July 18, 2008. Council Liaison summary reports should be turned in to the Section office by July 25, 2008.

CLE Program: Climate Change: Avoiding, Managing, Resolving Emerging Risks, Disputes and Liability

Climate change responses are creating significant changes in broad sectors of the economy requiring that businesses and their lawyers focus on the numerous areas of opportunity and potential risk. The development of new regulations and incentives is underway; a new generation of energy and water projects is required; potential new legal risks are on the horizon. The speakers will flag the areas of potential exposure, describe newly developed insurance products to manage climate change related risk and discuss the benefits of utilizing alternative dispute resolution mechanisms to avoid and resolve disputes. The various collaborative and negotiated processes pursuant to which climate change policy is being shaped with stakeholder input will be reviewed.

This cross-cutting panel will provide practical information on how climate change will impact the practice of law. No matter your field of expertise, climate change and its regulation will impact your clients' business, operations, future plans, property, and investments. This "don't miss" panel will also explore how climate regulation has already affected law practice in Europe, the likely shape of climate regulation in the U.S. including the continuing emergence of state/ local regulation; how climate regulation will affect transactions and boardrooms in the U.S., including securities disclosures, greenhouse gas inventories, and preparing for anticipated sea level rise; and the forecast for climate litigation in the absence of federal climate legislation.

Hardship Scholarship Application

Scholarships are available for all section MCLE events. Scholarships are intended to increase membership involvement in entity activities by providing support to those who would otherwise be financially unable to participate.
