EXAMPLE [1]Subject: Returned mail: User unknown The original message was received at Wed, 12 Jun 1996 09:30:22 -0700 from localhost [127.0.0.1] ----- The following addresses had delivery problems -----(unrecoverable error) ----- Transcript of session follows ----- ... while talking to firmname.firmname.com.: >>> RCPT To: (notarealperson@firmname.com) <<< 550 (notarealperson@firmname.com)... User unknown 550 (notarealperson@firmname.com)... User unknown This means that the user did not exist. The Mail server claims this name, notarealperson@firmname.com is not a "known" user. You should unsubscribe notarealperson@firmname.com

Subject: Returned mail: Host unknown (Name server: notarealplace.com: host not found) The original message was received at Wed, 12 Jun 1996 09:30:33 -0700 from localhost [127.0.0.1] ----- The following addresses had delivery problems ----- (person@notarealplace.com) (unrecoverable error) ----- Transcript of session follows ----- 550 (person@notarealplace.com)... Host unknown (Name server: notarealplace.com: host not found)This means there is no "DNS" record for "notarealplace.com". You need to check the address spelling of the domain name ("notarealplace").

Subject: Returned mail: Local configuration error The original message was received at Wed, 12 Jun 1996 13:16:42 -0400 from [207.49.1.200] ----- The following addresses had delivery problems -----(unrecoverable error) ----- Transcript of session follows ----- 553 dialup.oar.net config error: mail loops back to myself 554 (jdonaldson@jdrp.com)... Local configuration error This means that the receiving server has a minor misconfiguration. If this happens, the list manager should contact us and remove the address from the list. We will then have to send mail to their postmaster.
EXAMPLE [4]
thughes@zeus.tcp.co.uk... Deferred: Connection refused by zeus.tcp.co.uk.The host machine the list is trying to send mail to, (in this case zeus.tcp.co.uk ) is not allowing people to send mail to it. This is caused by a server misconfiguration (at THEIR end), or the machine is off, out of order, or otherwise not functioning, and trying to bring itself back to life. Leave the person on the list for 5 more of these messages. If the problem has not cleared up by then, remove them.
To remove a person from the list, simply send a message to listserv@mail.abanet.org:
delete listname userid@domain.ext User's Name
