CMPDL E-mail List

Are you a lawyer or law student interested in disability law or disability rights? If so, the Commission on Mental and Physical Disability Law has an e-mail list that may be of interest to you. Although primarily associated with the Commission's Mentor Program, the e-mail list is a frequently used list server open to all. The list has two purposes:

  • a means of distribution for news, events, and information regarding disability law and disability rights
  • a discussion forum for various matters related to lawyers and law students with disabilities

To join the list, please send an e-mail to with the subject line "Join E-mail List" and your name and e-mail address in the body. Please use this method if you wish to be on the e-mail list, but do not want to be enrolled in our Mentor Program.

Below is the current list policy:

  1. E-mail List: this e-mail list has two purposes:
    1. Discussion forum on issues pertinent to the members. Typically, someone who has a problem, query, or point to make will send an e-mail to the list. People then follow up to the individual or the entire list. Every now and then there is an ongoing, yet very informative, discussion that will occur on the list.
    2. Posting of information. The Commission will send out information for events related to disability law and disability rights on the list. Members are encouraged to use the list for this purpose as well.
  2. E-mail List Guidelines: some things to keep in mind when posting to the e-mail list
    1. Proper reply. If an individual who sends out the initial e-mail requests that all replies are sent to him or her, make sure you reply to that person only and not the list's address. Please keep this in mind even if such a request was not made by the original sender and the nature of your reply is meant just for him or her.
    2. Don’t be afraid to pitch in. Everyone on this list has some experience that is worth contributing on one topic or another. People who reach out on the e-mail list are always open to another’s insight, no matter how big or small.
    3. Keep it civil. Goes without saying, and there hasn’t been a problem since I have been moderating; but it is nice to put it out there nonetheless.
    4. Political opinions. The purpose of the list is to help inform its members of disability law and disability rights issues. From time to time, such matters will intersect with politics and political news. Therefore, no messages will be allowed on the list that are partisan in nature or contain political opinions or political endorsements. A member may post an item only with a link to a webpage that has information on a disability issue that is political in nature, however, no commentary may accompany this link and it may not originate from any political campaign. The ABA is a non-partisan, voluntary membership organization. Neither the ABA nor the Commission on Mental and Physical Disability Law has a political action committee, makes political contributions, or endorses candidates for office.
  3. List Membership
    1. Access to the e-mail list. You do NOT have to be in the Mentor Program to be a part of this service. If you know of someone who would benefit from the list, but does not want to be a mentor/mentee, tell them to e-mail the Commission in order to be signed up.
    2. Membership count. Currently (4/30/08), this e-mail list reaches out to more than 165 people. We hope to have over 200 by the end of spring.
