Project to Provide Pro Bono Legal , Education and Board/Committee Services to Habitat for Humanity
The Pro Bono Committee's project involves working with Habitat for Humanity to provide and coordinate volunteer attorneys to serve the organization at local (affiliate) levels to address both local and national issues. Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit house building program open to all people in need of shelter. The program works in partnership with people in need to build and renovate simple, affordable housing. The houses are sold to those in need at no profit and with interest-free mortgages. Habitat for Humanity has long been recognized for its effectiveness by other nonprofit organizations, professional associates and governmental entities.
Throughout the country, Habitat for Humanity is in need of legal assistance in various capacities:
Assist local affiliates with the purchase of land, title clearance, conveyance documents and closings
Participate on local affiliate committees or boards of directors
Provide educational programs or materials for the lenders of local affiliates regarding real estate issues
Contribute to the organization's nationwide standardization of mortgage documents and the review of the proposed documents in consideration of state laws
Assist affiliates with foreclosure and bankruptcy issues
Assist affiliates with employment law & corporate governance issues
The Pro Bono Committee coordinates, on a nationwide basis, the services of volunteer attorneys to provide the above pro bono services to as many affiliates of Habitat for Humanity as possible. If you volunteer to provide land acquisition/title clearance services, contribute to educational programs or participate on a local affiliate committee or board of directors, your contact information will be forwarded to the HFH General Counsel's office in Georgia, which will establish the link between you and the local HFH affiliate board. If you volunteer to work on nationwide standardization of mortgage forms, your contribution to the project will be coordinated directly by the General Counsel's office.
The Pro Bono Committee list serve (Internet e-mail and discussion group) may be used by Pro Bono Committee members (project volunteers) serving HFH. As you become familiar with the real estate issues of local affiliates and would like to consult other HFH attorneys, you may use the list serve to request assistance or share information.
