Johannes Kingma Letter from the Chair
Welcome to the ABA-TIPS Professionals', Officers', and Directors' Liability Committee ("PODL"). PODL addresses liability issues impacting professionals and insurance coverage designed to protect professionals including directors and officers, attorneys, bankers, accountants, design professionals, architects, engineers, and insurance and securities agents and brokers. PODL also directs its attention to laws governing the duties, responsibilities and liability of professionals. PODL is composed of in-house counsel and private attorneys with professional liability expertise both for the defense and for the prosecution claims. It provides a great forum for networking and expanding your knowledge of the law.
I am most pleased to be chair of PODL this year. Glenn Olson from Long Levitt in San Francisco is our chair-elect. I am also the chair of the Commercial Litigation Practice Group at Carlock, Copeland & Stair in Atlanta (www.carlockcopeland.com). I typically represent attorneys, accountants, directors and officers. Our firm, however, represents a full spectrum of professionals and that is one reason PODL works so well for us. Even if you only represent a few of the specialties within PODL, I think you will find your membership worthwhile. I am also active in the Professional Liability Underwriting Society and frequently attend conferences sponsored by the ABA Standing Committee on Lawyers Professional Liability. If you are ever attending a PLUS or Standing Committee function, please do not hesitate to contact me, and I will be glad to meet you there. Members of PODL collectively possess a vast store of knowledge and we help each other learn more every day. I hope you will get involved in PODL and that you will find it as rewarding as I have. Below is a summary of what we have planned for 2008-2009 so far, but we need your help too. I hope you will share you ideas for PODL with me and the rest of our committee.
Get Involved! Network and Publicize Your Expertise!
Newsletters and website. If you a member of PODL, you will get periodic newsletters on timely topics. Please send your ideas for articles to our newsletter editor Machau Millett of Edwards, Angell, Palmer and Dodge at mmillett@eapdlaw.com. Our website address is www.abanet.org\dch\committee.cfm?com=IL220000. If you have newsletters or articles you have already written on a Professional or D&O Liability issue linked to the PODL website, please contact Lauren Godfrey at Lauren.godfrey@dbr.com. PODL has about 1,000 members and we can help you publicize your expertise.
Continuing Legal Education
Are you, or perhaps some member of your firm, a dynamic speaker? Please help us plan and present CLE programs by contacting Shannon Sprinkle at ssprinkle@carlockcopeland.com. Programs can range from a one hour scripted teleconference to a multi-day program. We plan to present a three hour program on Failing Businesses Driving D&O and E&O Litigation at the ABA 2009 annual meeting in Chicago. But we hope you will have ideas that we can help you bring to fruition. For more information, please contact Joe Kingma at Carlock, Copeland & Stair (404-221-2278; jkingma@carlockcopeland.com) or Glenn Olson at Long & Levitt (415-438-4483; golson@longlevit.com).
Thanks for your interest in PODL and I hope to see you at one of our events soon.
Very truly yours,
JOHANNES S. KINGMA
