Dear UNIIC Member, On behalf of the United Nations International Institutions Committee of the ABA Section of International Law, we welcome you to a new bar year. At the ABA Annual Meeting in New York City, we assumed our roles as your new committee co-chairs.
We thank Ellen Yost, immediate past co-chair, for her outstanding leadership to this committee for the past several years. Under Ellen's excellent leadership, ABA Day at the U.N. has become a particularly relevant and informative section function, and we hope to continue this tradition into the future. For the bar year 2008-2009, we hope to undertake the following:
1. Monthly telephone conference calls: We will conduct monthly conference calls on a specific day each month, and hope to invite presenters to the call, to update UNIIC members on current projects and developments.
2. Committee liaisons: Since we are a coordinating committee, we will be contacting committees within the Section of International Law, to identify those committees with U.N.-related agendas.
3. Programs: In September 2008 a call for programs will be issued by the Spring 2009 Meeting committee, and we will be forwarding program proposals for consideration. 4. Website / Listserv: The committee wants to provide useful information to its members and will attempt to use its listserv to this end.
5. Year-in-Review article: Each committee of the Section of International Law is asked to make a committee submission to the publication Year-in-Review, with articles of interest affecting 2008. A call for YIR articles will be made shortly. 6. Special projects: The committee will be listed as a resource to the Task Force on Treaties in U.S. Law, chaired by Ron Bettauer (who also is vice-chair of the UNIIC).
7. Volunteers needed: In order to accomplish these goals we first need committee members to indicate their interest in the above projects. Please let us know what you would like to work on! We look forward to working with, and eventually meeting all of you. With your help, this bar year can be one that is excellent and productive. Please contact us at any time if you have suggestions or questions.
Best Regards, Marilyn Kaman, Co-Chair: marilyn.kaman@courts.state.mn.us Richard Field, Co-Chair: field@pipeline.com
