Section of International Law: International Energy & Natural Resources Committee

Section of International Law:
International Energy & Natural Resources Committee

Steering Committee

Many of the most active and productive committees in the Section are motored by a steering committee. We want you to be able to participate in and lead committee activities. The steering committee is a great way to do that and become involved. It will have monthly calls to discuss matters important to committee members. We will let you know when the next call is. To participate all you need to do is call in. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Rick Silberstein or Teresa Maurea Faria, our Co-Chairs, or our Vice-Chairs Amy Aiq, Mattia Colonnelli, Paul Kiernan, Ricardo Silva and Molly Steele.

About the Committee

The International Energy & Natural Resources Committee meets and advances the interests of its members, professionals and practitioners in the international energy and natural resources field. The committee promotes and facilitates the exchange of information, expertise, experiences and best practices regarding international energy and natural resources development projects while helping its members serve the needs and interests of their clients. The committee engages its members, programs and initiatives in continuous dialogue through the use of technology including listserves, website, social media and others.

Among others, with the committee you can find information on current areas of interest to our members: Privatization efforts with respect to oil, gas, electricity and other natural resources; international hydroelectric development; private-public partnerships in energy projects; LNG projects; renewable energy projects including wind project development and regulatory issues; development/status/future of Russia's production sharing law; Russian/Ukraine pipeline dispute; effects of China's territorial claim to the South China Sea; Natural resources of the seas, including fisheries and marine mammals and illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU); energy development project opportunities in Latin-America; opening of Vietnam to western exploration and development activities; mining in Latin America, Canada, Australia, Southeast Asia and Africa; World Bank and other multilateral energy infrastructure efforts; international project finance, IFC Environmental and Social Standards, and Equator Principles; implications of international environmental initiatives on energy development; the overlapping between trade, energy and environment toward energy strategy development balancing economic prosperity and clean environment; Foreign Corrupt Practices Act challenges for U.S. energy companies operating abroad; cross-border transit issues; challenges to siting and implementing energy and natural resources development projects; energy and natural resources project development and local communities disputes; dealing with blocking coalitions to oil, gas, electricity and other natural resources development projects; inclusiveness of land user constituencies in energy project development; corporate-community engagement; and conflict prevention due diligence as well as alternative dispute resolution and issues with respect to energy and natural resource, exploration, development, and projects.

This committee is interested in increasing its membership, learning more about the interests of its members, and welcoming practitioners entering the international energy and natural resources field.

Year In Review

The Committee will be participating in the Year in Review. The Year in Review is a summary of the most important legislation, jurisprudence and administrative actions that have taken place throughout the year in jurisdictions throughout the world. It is published in The International Lawyer, the quarterly law journal of the ABA?s International Law Section. Each summer the International Law Section publishes the YIR based on submissions from all of its committees.

The Committee?s 2007 YIR contribution was an excellent work covering the five continents and 15 jurisdictions. Molly Steele was responsible for editing and Mattia Colonnelli, Matteo Falcione, Robert E. Wilson, Petra Linsmeier, Richard Silberstein, Miroljub Ma?e?i?, Ben Donovan, Nabil L. Khodadad, Matthew Hinxman, Mahmud R. Mukhtar, Faris Sahra, Babatunde Irukera, Shourya Mandal, Nabanita Roy, Serge A. Lomako, Miriam Grunstein, Juan F. Pardini B., Bruno Werneck, Gustavo Coelho, Alvaro Araya, Jean Paul Chabaneix, Ilan Dunsky, Dina Bestawros, Laura McMahon and Ashley Frankston contributed as authors. The piece done by the Committee has been posted on our website. The hard copy has also been distributed.

For this year's publication we need volunteers for articles and editing. Please let us know if you are interested. The written submissions are in law review format with a length of no more than 5 double-spaced pages, including footnotes. This is a great way to begin participating in committee activities.

Although the exact deadline for submitting the contribution has not yet been set, based on past experience we anticipate that each of you would need to provide your initial drafts to the committee?s editors no later than 1 November 2008.
