The ABA Section of International Law has already created a Women's Interest Network (WIN), a Young Lawyers' Interest Network (YIN), and a Senior Lawyers' Interest Network (SIN). In recognition of its commitment to diversity, the ABA Section of International Law has created a Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Issues Network (GIN), an interest network for persons interested in legal issues affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities. Membership in GIN is open to all persons; it is not necessary to be a member of the LGBT community to be a member of GIN or to attend future events sponsored by the group.
The mission of GIN includes: -- Proposing and organizing substantive panels for possible presentation at section meetings; -- Organizing social and networking events during section meetings and at other times during the year; -- Providing resources for LGBT law students and lawyers; -- Working with other national and international groups; and -- Proposing policies, programs, and publications relating to legal issues affecting the LGBT community. The Section of International Law notes that the "big ABA" itself has recently created a Commission on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, whose mission is to help secure for LGBT persons full and equal access and participation in the ABA, the legal profession, and the justice system. Through educational efforts, policy development, building relationships with leaders in the profession, and other activities, the ABA Commission seeks to secure equal treatment in the ABA, the legal profession, and the justice system without regard to sexual orientation or gender identity, remove barriers to professional advancement, and promote diversity. These ABA Commission goals are also ones that will be shared by the Section and GIN. GIN will be one of the avenues the Section seeks to promote them.
