Message from Co-Chair Lawrence Wojcik
Committee Members,
On behalf of Kate Richtman and Professor Charles Ogletree and myself I would like to welcome all of the new members to the Juvenile Justice Committee and thank our long-time members for your continued commitment to juvenile justice issues. We have a very exciting year ahead of us and we have set some very ambitious goals for the upcoming year.
During our first meeting this November we will go over these goals with you as a committee and set our priorities for the year. If you can not make the meeting in person, we have made arrangements for you to call in and participate in the discussion.
Our preliminary goals for this year are: (1) to complete our collateral consequences project (a state by state report of the juvenile collateral consequences in our country) (2) plan the first, in what we hope will be an annual, Youth Justice Debate in Washington DC honoring the late Bob Sheppard (3) continue to publish articles for the legal profession about juvenile justice (4) Select a recipient of our prestigious Livy Hall Award (5) Continue development of our Standards Project led by Judge Ernestine Grey and Kris Henning and (5) develop new policy. With respect to policy development, several members have indicated a desire to work on the following topics: (a) policy that addresses issues arising from the privatization of punishment and which permits jurisdictions to charge indigent juveniles for time spent in a private detention center or for the use of an ankle bracelet, (b) policy that address children?s due process rights when they are facing expulsion from school and (c) policy that promotes the creation of law school juvenile justice clinics.
In order to continue the great work we?ve been doing, we will need everyone?s participation. If you have not already signed up to work on a state for the collateral consequences project please contact Chris Gowen (gowenc@staff.abanet.org) and sign up today. So, we want to strongly encourage all of you to get involved this year and to make suggestions on how we can improve our committee. We hope to see everyone on November 5th in DC at our first meeting
