Mission Statement
The Consumer Financial Services Committee caters to lawyers that practice in the area of consumer financial services law. Committee membership represents both industry interests and consumers, and hails from private practice, government, the non-profit sector, and educational institutions. The Committee focuses on new developments in consumer financial services law relating to residential mortgage and personal property finance; truth in lending; financial privacy, credit reporting, information security and identity theft; federal preemption of state and local laws; electronic delivery of consumer financial services; stored value and credit cards; credit discrimination and access to financial services; litigation and arbitration; and debt collection and consumer bankruptcy. The Committee also co-sponsors activities with the Conference on Consumer Finance Law and the American College of Consumer Finance Lawyers such as the Fred Fisher Memorial Program at the Section's Spring Meeting. Individual committee members regularly contribute to the Annual Survey of Consumer Financial Services Law in The Business Lawyer, the preeminent scholastic journal cataloging developments in business law published by the Section of Business Law, American Bar Association. Additionally, the Committee hosts substantive meetings three times a year at which members can obtain valuable CLE credits. Such meetings also afford our members the opportunity to network with other attorneys working in this area on a nationwide basis.
How to Get Involved?
Are you interested in joining or working with the Consumer Financial Services Committee? The Committee meets three times a year at the stand alone Committee meeting in January, the Business Law Section Spring Meeting in April and the ABA Annual Meeting in August. Most of our work is done at these meetings and we welcome anyone to join us. You can contact Frank Springfield, Publications Chair, Lynette Hotchkiss or Stephanie Shaw, Publications Vice Chairs, if you have any interest in submitting articles or content to the Committee's website. The Committee also has an active Young Lawyers subcommittee that serves as a great way for anyone practicing in this industry for less than ten years to get plugged into the Committee and Emily Miller, Young Lawyers Chair, can help get you involved with this subcommittee. Lastly, you are also welcome to contact Terry Franzen, Committee Chair, Rick Hackett or Nikki Munro, Committee Vice Chairs, Stephanie Cohen, Membership Chair, or Lois Woodward, Membership Vice Chair, to help you find out other ways to get plugged in. Pro Bono Statement
The Committee has taken a leadership position in the Business Law Section's pro bono initiatives. It has identified promotion of consumer financial literacy as its principal goal. Its members have created, expanded and continue to update and maintain the website Safeborrowing.com, which provides information in lay terms about the financial matters that have the greatest importance to consumers: home mortgages, auto finance, credit cards and student loans. The Committee's members have taken an active role in the Section's annual Equal Justice Conference, which provides educational programs that promote pro bono efforts by business lawyers. Its members have also set up a speakers bureau that provides speakers to make presentations to high school students about consumer finance in selected metropolitan areas.
