Program Description

CMS just announced plans to expand list of preventable injuries. Sign up for this program to learn more about the expansion and other "never event" and "preventable injury" issues and strategies.

Medical errors and the complications they create impose big costs on patients and health plan payers. Now public and private payers, regulators, and others increasingly are adding “never event” and ”preventable injury” strategies as tools to manage health care quality and costs by denying payment for injuries or illness resulting from medical errors.  Less than a year after adopting its original “preventable injury policy, CMS in April announced plans to expand its list of “preventable injuries” to be denied Medicare coverage.  Meanwhile, private payers also increasingly are targeting preventable injuries and other medical errors for reimbursement denial.   While everyone agrees that minimizing preventable injuries and other never events is a worthy goal, defining and administering these emerging policies presents a wide range of definitional, administrative and political challenges.  Our panel of expert legal counsel will examine various payer models and discuss the challenges and opportunities for payers and providers in connection with the evolving design and deployment of these “never event” and “preventable injuries” policies by payers.
