Program Description

If you couldn't attend the ABA-APA meeting and missed out on the added program, "The Litigation over the Children of the Fundamental Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints," you're in luck. This teleconference will examine the laudatory but frequently conflicting goals in dependency proceedings of seeking family reunification, determining the best interests of the children, and balancing parents' rights to raise their children and individual liberties with the state's obligation to protect its children.

Program Faculty

Donald N. Duquette, clinical professor of law and director of the Child Advocacy Law Clinic (CALC) at the University of Michigan Law School, has developed one of the most respected and influential child advocacy law programs in the country. The CALC is the oldest such clinic in the U.S. and celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2007. Mr. Duquette’s 1990 book, Advocating for the Child in Protection Proceedings, formed the conceptual framework for the first national evaluation of child representation as mandated by the U.S. Congress (National Study of Guardian ad Litem Effectiveness, by CSR Inc). He was one of the drafters of the Michigan statute defining the role of the child’s lawyer-guardian ad litem.

Ann Haralambie is a certified family law specialist in private practice in Tucson, Arizona.  Her practice is restricted to family and juvenile cases, with an emphasis on custody and child abuse. She is a former president of the National Association of Counsel for Children and charter life member of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children.  She founded and serves as president of the Arizona Association of Counsel for Children. She is also a volunteer Judge Pro Tempore in the Pima County Superior Court.

Lenore Knudtson
began her professional career as a school psychologist serving children of all ages with disabilities. After becoming an attorney, she continued to focus on the needs of children, serving as counsel for many children and for organizations dedicated to serving children, especially those living in poverty.  Ms. Knudtson has developed special expertise in education law and has conducted trainings and presentations across the country in special education. She is licensed to practice law in Arizona, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Currently, she is in private practice focusing on juvenile law and education law.

Kathryn Kuehnle, Ph.D., is a Florida-licensed psychologist and currently holds a faculty position as assistant professor at the University of South Florida, Louis de Parte Florida Mental Health Institute, Department of Mental Health Law and Policy. In addition to her faculty position, she maintains a private forensic and clinical practice in Tampa, and specializes in the evaluation of children alleged to have been sexually abused and in the treatment of maltreated children and victims of other family violence. She further serves as a consultant to the legal and mental health professions and other community agencies.
