Nonprofit institutions are a significant segment of the U.S. business community. Many hospitals, educational institutions, and some of the largest private trusts in the country are nonprofits. The financial clout they wield can be enormous, and they often are influential in the political sphere. That's why the growing criticisms of how major nonprofit organizations operate are cause for concern. The entire nonprofit community is in a state of legal crisis. Nonprofits have been drawn into the post-Enron fray and Congress, prosecutors, and the IRS all are looking closely at nonprofits. Meanwhile, Columbia University's law school has introduced a program to train members of state attorney general offices about the law relating to nonprofits. This ABA Journal article and program describe nonprofit management problems, repairs being considered, and what trustees, board members and counsel can do to keep their nonprofit entity out of trouble.
