A Storm Brews Over Wind Power

Wind power is an essential element of the national push for alternative energy sources. In 2008, the U.S. surpassed Germany as the world’s leading producer of wind-powered electricity. Its advocates argue that wind power could one day provide twenty percent of the nation’s electricity while generating thousands of new jobs and revitalizing rural communities hard hit in the current recession. People who live close to the new wind turbines, however, contend that wind power comes at a large price that the advocates ignore. A growing group of people complain that the turbines emit loud whooshes and rumbles and a rhythmic hum that disrupts sleep and causes headaches, fatigue and nausea. Others claim that shadow flicker caused by the spinning blades chopping the sunlight creates health problems as well.
