Following an introduction by Richard Soden, chair of the ABA Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs, Cydney Batchelor and Tim Denison discuss common causes of disciplinary complaints. Ms. Batchelor and Mr. Denison bring a wealth of practical experience to the subject. Ms. Batchelor is a deputy trial counsel for the State Bar of California, and has taught in the Bar’s ethics school. For the past five years she has coordinated the Northern California attorney discipline cases that involve drugs, alcohol or mental health conditions. Mr. Denison, is a practicing lawyer from Louisville, Kentucky, who defends lawyers in disciplinary hearings. Together, with their 360 degree view of the subject, they suggest steps that practicing lawyers can take to reduce the likelihood that they will be the subject of disciplinary complaints.
