Society stands to lose significant numbers of its youth to crime, poverty, unemployment, lack of education, violence and family dysfunction. Efforts are being made around the country, however, to find ways to address some of these needs, especially on the legal front, through a combination of programs and efforts in courts, schools and related agencies. The efforts are at the forefront of ABA President Karen Mathis' initiatives. This story would look at the threats to American youth, how they play out as legal issues and how legal initiatives are seeking to address them. An important aspect of the story will be to assess the success of these efforts and look at whether new alternatives need to be explored. This will be an important story for lawyers in domestic relations, education, the criminal justice system and legal services delivery to lower-income persons. It will also interest lawyers seeking to work in the pro bono field.
