CLE Formats

The American Bar Association Center for Continuing Legal Education (ABA-CLE) serves as the central CLE resource for the ABA—and the profession—by providing quality programs and products of national scope. ABA-CLE is overseen by the ABA Standing Committee on Continuing Legal Education and works closely with experts from the ABA Sections and the profession at large in developing programs and products in a variety of delivery formats.

ABA-CLE National Institutes – Live, in-person one- or two-day conferences

National Institutes are known to members of the ABA and the legal profession as high-quality, carefully produced continuing legal education seminars held live at locations throughout the country. These 1-3 day conferences use a combination of lectures and workshops to present valuable information to the legal profession. In addition to the legal instruction offered, they provide a unique networking opportunity for lawyers and faculty who practice in the same or related areas of interest.

ABA-CLE Teleconferences – Training provided through live telephone conferences

ABA-CLE Teleconferences deliver CLE live via the telephone. To join the program, participants call a toll-free number from their offices, homes, or anywhere they have a phone connection. The programs are typically 90 minutes in length, with adequate time allotted for questions and answers. ABA-CLE Teleconferences can be “stand-alone,” transmitted from live programs, or delivered in conjunction with periodicals and publications. Teleconferences provide "Fast Track" CLE programming based upon hot topics such as recent court decisions or in combination with publications.

ABA-CLE Videoconferences – Interactive video and audio programming

Videoconferences are 90-minute programs on current legal developments that allow real-time, interactive discussions with the country’s top corporate counsel, practitioners, litigators and government regulators directly from your conference room or telephone. Offered in cooperation with one or more ABA Entities, they are transmitted live to law offices through a commercial video conference provider. The audio portion of the program is also available by telephone for those offices that do not have videoconferencing facilities.

Audio and Video Webcasting (Streaming) – Live and archived audio and video CLE programs available on the Internet

Audio and video webcasting enables attorneys to access both live and archived CLE programs over the Internet. Participants can listen to the program online while viewing electronic slides (if available) and other course materials. Faculty interact with the audience live during the program via e-mail. Video webcasting adds video to the streaming signal, so participants can view online programs along with accompanying slides and materials. VideoLaw Seminars are professionally-produced CLE videotapes designed as single programs or in modular series. VideoLaw Seminars frequently incorporate demonstrations, dramatizations, computer-generated graphics, and other visual effects to enhance program content. Programs are produced in a television studio or on location in offices, courtrooms, and other appropriate sites.

ABA-CLE Books – Course Materials

A course materials book or study guide accompanies each National and Regional Institute, Videoconference, Videolaw Seminar, and Teleconference. Subsequent to the program, these outstanding resource materials are made available for purchase.

ABA-CLE Audio Books – Previously published outstanding books available on audio.

Audiotapes and CDs based on previously published books afford attorneys an opportunity to use unproductive time to enhance practice skills. Many who can't find time to set aside to read can find time to listen to an audiotape or CD, perhaps while commuting.

ABA-CLE Audio and Video Programs – Programming available on DVD, CD, video, and audio CD

Each National Institute, Satellite Seminar, Video Conference, Videolaw Seminar and Teleconference is recorded and made available for purchase subsequent to the program. Course materials and study guides typically accompany program and many can be purchased separately. These ABA-CLE self-study products can be purchased through the ABA online catalog.
