National Security Discussion Topics

The discussion topics described on this page are designed to encourage informed dialogue on some of the most compelling national security issues we face as a nation—and as a global community—today. Each discussion topic offers a background article, suggestions for further reading, and discussion questions for leading conversations on national security in your community.

The discussion topics are grouped under three main headings

• Part One: National Security Apparatuses and Legal Regimes. Topics under this heading examine national security frameworks that have been developed at both the international and national levels and consider the adequacy of existing models for addressing new national security challenges.
• Part Two: The Evolution of National Security Strategy. Topics under this heading consider how the legacy of the Cold War influences national security strategy today and ask what factors should shape the development of a new national security strategy.
• Part Three: Challenges and Choices. Topics under this heading address specific challenges to individual liberties, economic development opportunities, immigration policies, and national defense raised by national security concerns.
