Why?

Pluses/Challenges of Practice Area:
Law is a second career. I spent six years in banking and wanted to find a way to utilize my business background in the practice of law. Our domestic relations group specializes in handling high net worth clients that typically have closely held businesses and fairly sophisticated balance sheets. This practice area is the perfect way to combine my business background with the practice of law.

Core Skills/Key Knowledge Needed in Your Practice Area:
It is critical to have the ability to multi-task in a domestic relations practice. We typically have a high volume of cases at different stages of completion, and the ability to multi-task is essential. It is also important to have very good human relations skills. Often times you are dealing with a client who is "forced" into litigation because a spouse filed for divorce. It takes a great deal of patience to assist that client through the process of terminating a marriage. Also, our practice involves a great deal of actual trial work. Trial advocacy skills are imperative.

Advice to Lawyers and Law Students Interested in Your Practice Area:
Try to maintain a healthy balance between work and home.

How?

I began my career clerking with the Domestic and Juvenile Court as a law student. I developed a rapport with the judges and magistrates in the court, which led to an associate position in private practice.
