For those with an affinity for the work of individuals and institutions that create product in the entertainment industry, the practice area offers the opportunity to help further and protect the interests of creators. This is a plus. The challenge is that attorneys are not always perceived as champions of the creative process, but, instead, foes. Thus, attorneys are often met with great resistance.

It is imperative to have good analytical abilities, good drafting skills and good negotiation skills. It is helpful to possess good people skills and be a problem solver. It is also essential to understand the creative, business and legal aspects of the operation of the music, film and television industries.

How?

Career Path to Current Position:
I have been an associate at large, medium and small law firms, as well as, practiced law at a major motion picture studio, and, thus, had the opportunity to learn the practice through working with seasoned veterans from the profession. This also allowed me the opportunity to meet individuals who have been quite helpful in the advancement of my career.

Networking, and, thus, developing helpful relationships can be quite useful in finding employment and other business opportunities.

As Chairman of the Motion Picture, Cable, Television and Radio Division of the American Bar Associations Forum on the Entertainment and Sports Industries, I planned 3 panels for the most recent Annual Meeting. I also planned and moderated a panel for the Black Entertainment and Sports Lawyers Association's most recent Annual Conference.
