Why?
Pluses/Challenges of Practice Area:
In both my areas of concentration (antitrust and patents), the
work is exceedingly interesting and there is always something
new to learn. The stakes are often very high in these matters,
so they offer an opportunity to dig in and do the best work.
Core Skills/Key Knowledge Needed in Your Practice Area:
For antitrust: basic economics. For patent litigation: basic physics and/or chemistry.
Advice to Lawyers and Law Students Interested in Your Practice Area:
If still a student, take the underlying classes in law school. If already in practice, make it known at your firm that you want to be included in the next matter that arises in the field. Either way, prepare yourself by doing some extra reading of statutes and caselaw on your own time.

Arguing an appeal before the U.S. Court of Appeals for
the Federal Circuit and having them affirm in my favor 5 days later;
arguing before the South Dakota Supreme Court on a certified question
from a federal district court; being woken at 4:00 A.M. to be told
that we had just won summary judgment in a case, and sending an
e-mail at 4:30 A.M. to our opponents to withdraw our settlement
offer.
Intriguing Interests:
Travel. I get to Korea and Japan for work every so often.
