Business Terminology By the Letters:
Words and Phrases Lawyers Need to Know

A 60-Minute Program for New Lawyers
and Those Who Supervise Them

The one-hour teleconference focuses on the importance of understanding the terminology, the financial and managerial acronyms and concepts you need to know to better serve your clients. The panelists define and discuss specific concepts, such as Six Sigma, operating efficiency ratios, historic cost-based accounting, book value, and interpret and talk about commonly used acronyms, including MBO, MD&A, ROI, GAAP, GAAS, and COSO. They also touch on some of the niche-industry specific terminology, and conclude with a Q&A session.

This program is moderated by Debra Snider, author of The Productive Culture Blueprint for corporate law departments and their outside counsel. Additional faculty from the law firm, business school, and in-house contexts are:

  • Bryn R. Vaaler, partner and Director of Professional Development at Dorsey & Whitney LLP,
  • Gonzalo Freixes, attorney and professor at UCLA's Anderson Graduate School of Management, and
  • James R. Jenkins, Senior Vice President and General Counsel at Deere & Company and Vice Chair/Board of Directors of the Association of Corporate Counsel (formerly ACCA).
