Mistakes Lawyers Make
A 60-Minute
Program for Law Students, Prospective and New Lawyers, and Those Who
Supervise Them
Program Description
and Panelist Information
Learning from our mistakes is smart;
learning from the mistakes of others is wise.
Help your summer associates, third-year
hires and new lawyers anticipate and avoid classic mistakes, common
missteps, and core misconceptions, including faulty assumptions and
foundational ethical problems... so that the shared experience of
others can help forge their successful start in your organization.
Moderated by Kathy Morris, long-time
legal career counselor and director of the ABA Career Resource Center,
with special participation by George Kuhlman, ABA Ethics
Counsel and Associate Director of the ABA’s Center for Professional
Responsibility, this one hour Teleconference features prominent faculty
members from a range of practice and practical backgrounds:
Burton Lipshie, Past Chair of the Professional
Development Consortium, an international association for those in
charge of lawyer training in large firms, and Managing Attorney of
Litigation at Stroock, Stroock and Lavan in New York;
Sharon Jones, Managing Director
of Fuse 3 Group, LLC in Chicago, specializing in consulting with large
firms and companies on success strategies for their key professionals,
with her own rich background in large firm, large company law
department environments; and
Robert Major, Jr., founding
Partner of San Francisco-based Major, Hagen & Africa, a global
attorney search firm, with first hand large firm and in-house
experience.

Program Agenda
I. Overview of Agenda, Introduction of
Faculty and Program Themes
Everyone makes mistakes and it is important to deal with them well and
promptly. Learn from your mistakes and those of others, and consider
the ethical ramifications of the mistakes.
II. Ethics Issues and Concerns
The ABA Ethics Counsel from the ABA Center for Professional
Responsibility addresses the Model Rules and the specific ways in which
mistakes invoke ethical concerns. Ethical ramifications are discussed
throughout the program as well, as specific mistakes are addressed by
the panelists and in the final Question and Answer session.
III. Firms’ Expectations of their
professionals
The founding partner of a global attorney search firm covers the
practice traits firms are looking for in their summer associates and
new lawyers, focusing both on attributes firms do want to see and
reinforce, and those they do not.
IV. Five Core Mistakes
The experienced faculty, from both firms and companies, cover five key
mistakes lawyers make and propose ways to deal with them promptly,
should they arise. Practical fact patterns are used to illustrate the
mistakes, and best practices to avoid making them are presented.
V. Question and Answer Session with the
Participants
VI. Review and Conclusion
The moderator, the Director of the ABA Career Resource Center,
reinforces what has been covered over the hour, and concludes the
program.
